2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the John Newbery Medal, the most highly regarded prize in children’s literature. Named for 18th century British bookseller John Newbery, the Newbery Medal was founded by Publishers Weekly editor Frederic G. Melcher and the American Library Association in an effort to celebrate and encourage original creative work in children’s books.
The first Newbery Medal was awarded to The Story of Mankind by Hendrik Willem van Loon in 1922 with Honors given to five other books. Since then, many Newbery winners and Honors recipients have gone on to become classics, beloved by children and adults alike. Newbery books have been read by multiple generations in many languages around the world. Some are not only cherished stories, but valuable collectibles too.
